Fibre Reinforced Facade Encyclopedia: Properties

Green building rating credits are points awarded to a project, not to a product. That distinction governs everything else on this page. Green Star Buildings, NABERS and LEED all rate a building or its operation; none of them certifies a facade panel. What a material can do is provide the evidence a project team needs to claim a credit, and the evidence is almost always a third party document such as an environmental product declaration rather than a statement from the manufacturer. A supplier who says their product is Green Star rated has said something that does not exist.

No cladding panel has ever earned a Green Star point on its own. A panel with a published EPD gives the project team something to submit; a panel without one does not.

Green Star Buildings and what a product can supply

Green Star Buildings assesses a project across categories covering responsible practices, healthy and resilient outcomes, positive materials and reduced impacts. The credits a facade material can touch fall into two groups. The first is the responsible products framework, which awards value where products carry recognised third party certifications and declarations, with environmental product declarations among the strongest evidence. The second is upfront carbon, where the project calculates the embodied emissions of the building’s materials and demonstrates a reduction against a reference.

In both cases the manufacturer’s role is to supply verified data, not to claim a rating. An EPD produced to EN 15804 and independently verified gives a project team the module A1 to A3 figures they need and, where the EPD covers them, module C and D end of life scenarios as well. Without an EPD the team falls back on generic database values, which are usually conservative and therefore unhelpful to the project.

ShapeShift does not currently publish an environmental product declaration for ShapeShell-RC, RT or RG. Any project pursuing responsible products or upfront carbon credits should establish what data is available at the start of the submission process rather than at the end.

NABERS is a different thing entirely

NABERS rates measured operational performance of a building in use: energy, water, waste and indoor environment, expressed in stars and based on twelve months of actual data. It is not a design rating and it is not a materials rating, and there is no mechanism by which a cladding panel can hold a NABERS rating.

The facade does influence a NABERS Energy rating, but through the wall system rather than the panel. Thermal bridging at the substructure, the continuity of insulation, air tightness at panel junctions, the shading provided by fins and reveals, and glazing ratio all affect measured energy use. A lightweight panel contributes indirectly by allowing fewer and smaller brackets through the insulation, which reduces thermal bridging, but that is a detailing outcome rather than a material property.

NABERS has been extending into embodied emissions reporting for new buildings. Anyone relying on that pathway should confirm the current scope and rules directly with NABERS rather than from a product page.

LEED and the international picture

LEED approaches materials through disclosure rather than through thresholds. The building product disclosure and optimisation credits reward the number of permanently installed products that have a published EPD, that have documented responsible sourcing of raw materials, and that have disclosed material ingredients. A facade panel with a verified EPD counts toward the first of these, and the panel’s own environmental performance is not what is being scored; the existence and quality of the disclosure is.

Claims that do not hold up

  • Green Star rated or Green Star approved product: these ratings do not exist. Only buildings and, under separate schemes, fitouts and communities are rated
  • NABERS rated material: not possible. NABERS rates measured operational performance of buildings
  • Contributes to X points: a product cannot know how many points a project will achieve, because that depends on the whole submission
  • Recyclable, without qualification: a thermoset composite cannot be melted and reformed, and the available routes recover energy and mineral content or downcycle the material. State the route
  • Low carbon, without an EPD: an embodied carbon claim with no verified declaration and no stated system boundary cannot be checked, and assessors treat it accordingly
  • Sustainable: not a defined term in any of these systems

The useful response to a green credentials request is to supply what actually exists: the EPD if there is one, the batch test records, the material composition, the recycled content if it has been measured, the fixing method and the expected service life, and an honest statement of what is not available.

Where a facade genuinely moves the numbers

Three things matter more than the label on the panel, and all three are design decisions rather than product selections.

Material quantity. Upfront carbon is dominated by mass. A facade at 30 to 50 kg per square metre rather than 360 carries a fraction of the material, needs a much lighter substructure, and reduces the structural provision made for it through the whole building. That cascade is usually larger than the difference between two panel materials compared per kilogram.

Service life. A facade replaced at year twenty has roughly doubled its contribution over the building’s life. Durability, water absorption, moisture movement and fixing design determine whether that happens, and none of them appear on a marketing sheet about sustainability.

Operational performance of the wall system. Insulation continuity, thermal bridging at the brackets, air tightness and shading are what a NABERS Energy rating measures. Those are detailing decisions at the substructure and the junctions, and they are settled in shop drawings rather than in product selection.

Questions specifiers ask

Can a cladding panel be Green Star rated?

No. Green Star rates buildings, fitouts and communities, not products. A panel can supply evidence, principally a verified environmental product declaration, that helps a project team claim credits.

Does ShapeShift have an EPD?

ShapeShift does not currently publish an environmental product declaration. Confirm the current position before relying on one in a Green Star or LEED submission.

How does a facade affect a NABERS rating?

Indirectly, through the wall system rather than the panel. Thermal bridging at the brackets, insulation continuity, air tightness at junctions and shading all affect measured energy use, which is what NABERS rates.

What evidence should a specifier ask a facade supplier for?

An EN 15804 compliant EPD if one exists, measured recycled content, material composition, responsible sourcing certification, VOC data for any coatings, batch test records and a stated expected service life.

What does the most for the carbon outcome of a facade?

Reducing material quantity and making the facade last. A panel at a tenth the weight of precast reduces the substructure and the structural provision made for it, and a facade that does not need replacing at year twenty avoids repeating the whole impact.
