Australia’s ban on engineered stone left builders, joiners and developers looking for a benchtop material that delivers the stone look without the crystalline silica risk.

Our silica-free benchtops answer it directly: a glass-fibre reinforced concrete construction with zero added crystalline silica, the durability of concrete, and finish options from honed minimalism to exposed aggregate.

Why Crystalline Silica is Dangerous?

Australia officially implemented a national ban on engineered stone to protect workers from severe, irreversible lung diseases like silicosis caused by inhaling respirable crystalline silica dust generated during cutting, grinding, and finishing.

The scope of the ban prohibits the manufacture, supply, processing, and installation of any artificial slab, benchtop, or panel bound with resin that contains 1% or more crystalline silica by weight—excluding natural stone, concrete, porcelain, and ceramic tiles.

As a compliant alternative, advanced silica-free composites such as ShapeShell™-RC offer high-performance, non-combustible architectural cladding, structural panels, and complex 3D feature solutions without regulatory liability or WHS hazards.

Material Options

Standard RC

Utilizes reinforced concrete, a widely accepted and durable material for benchtops. Optional admixtures to enhance durability and aesthetics. Standard RC is composed of cement with aggregates.

Non Crystalline Silica RC

Minimizing respirable crystalline silica exposure by eliminating added crystalline silica in the material mix. Contains amorphous silica, with no artificial crystalline silica additives.

Silica Free RC

Silica-free material making it the safest option for workers and end-users. Moving away from traditional concrete and natural stone materials, to both crystalline and amorphous silica.

FAQs

Is GRC the same as engineered stone?

No. Engineered stone is crushed quartz in resin, the source of the silica risk. GRC is cement-reinforced with glass fibres.

Can it look like stone?

Through-colouring, aggregates and surface finishing produce stone-adjacent looks from light terrazzo effects to dark monolithic concrete.

Is it heat and scratch resistant?

It is concrete: hard-wearing, heat-tolerant and repairable. We applied a special sealer that can resist scratches and stains.
